Azym Dossa (1950–2026): The Easy Coach Founder Who Changed Kenya’s Bus Travel Forever

Kenya’s transport industry is mourning the death of Azym Dossa, the founder of Easy Coach, whose bold vision and disciplined management style transformed long-distance bus travel in the country.

Dossa passed away on February 26, 2026, bringing to a close a remarkable journey that reshaped how Kenyans experience intercity transport. To many passengers, Easy Coach was more than just a bus company — it was a promise of order, punctuality and dignity in an industry once known for chaos.

A Late Bloomer with a Clear Vision

Unlike many entrepreneurs who start young, Dossa launched Easy Coach at the age of 52. By then, he had already built a long and successful professional career.

A trained public accountant, he spent years working in the United Kingdom and Canada, gaining international exposure in finance and corporate governance. He later returned to Kenya and served for nearly two decades as Chief Financial Officer at Akamba Public Road Services, then one of East Africa’s most prominent bus operators.

It was during his time at Akamba that Dossa studied the strengths and weaknesses of Kenya’s transport sector. He understood fleet management, route planning and cost structures. But he also saw glaring gaps — unreliable departure times, overcrowded buses and a lack of basic passenger facilities.

These observations planted the seed for what would later become Easy Coach.

The Leap of Faith in 2003

In December 2003, Dossa made a decision that surprised many around him. He left his comfortable life abroad and returned to Kenya to start a bus company from scratch.

He began with just seven buses operating the Nairobi–Kisumu route. The odds were stacked against him. Established players already dominated the market, and price competition was fierce.

Yet Dossa did something unexpected.

While competitors charged approximately KSh 400 for the Nairobi–Kisumu journey, he priced his ticket at KSh 500 — deliberately higher than the market average. It was a risky move. Some of his own staff reportedly doubted the strategy.

But Dossa believed customers would pay more for reliability and comfort.

He was right.

Redefining Passenger Experience

Easy Coach quickly distinguished itself by introducing standards rarely seen in the sector at the time.

The company implemented fixed departure schedules, eliminating the common “wait-until-full” model. It strictly prohibited overloading. Drivers adhered to traffic regulations. Each route maintained a standby bus to minimise delays caused by breakdowns.

Perhaps most revolutionary was the introduction of dedicated passenger lounges equipped with clean washrooms. In an industry where travelers often waited in crowded, informal bus parks, this was a significant shift.

Passengers responded positively. Word spread that Easy Coach offered a predictable and respectful travel experience. Some customers even travelled from towns not yet served by the company just to board an Easy Coach bus.

Within three years, the fleet expanded from seven to 40 buses. Over time, it grew to more than 100 buses serving over 35 destinations across Kenya.

Discipline Over Shortcuts

Dossa’s management philosophy centred on discipline and systems.

He resisted the temptation to maximise short-term profits through overloading or cutting corners. Instead, he focused on compliance with traffic laws and operational efficiency.

Industry observers often described Easy Coach as one of the few bus companies that consistently maintained structure in scheduling and customer service.

This systems-driven approach allowed the company to build trust — a rare currency in public transport.

Leadership During Tough Times

The COVID-19 pandemic posed one of the greatest challenges in the history of Kenya’s transport sector. Movement restrictions and reduced passenger numbers significantly affected revenues.

Reports indicate that Dossa chose not to lay off staff despite the downturn. Instead, the company relied on financial reserves and internal adjustments to keep employees supported during the crisis.

This decision reinforced his reputation as a leader who valued people as much as profit.

A Modest Life Behind the Success

Despite building one of Kenya’s most respected bus brands, Dossa was known for modesty.

He lived quietly and avoided the flamboyance often associated with business success. Those who interacted with him described him as calm, analytical and deeply focused on operational detail.

Friends and colleagues say he believed in steady growth rather than aggressive expansion driven by debt or speculation.

Retirement and Final Years

In early 2025, Dossa stepped down from active management due to age-related health challenges, handing over leadership responsibilities to Zulfiqar Adatia.

Even in retirement, his systems and standards remained embedded in the company’s operations.

His passing on February 26, 2026, has been widely described as the end of an era in Kenya’s transport industry.

A Lasting Legacy on Kenyan Highways

Today, Easy Coach buses are a common sight on major highways linking Nairobi to western Kenya and beyond.

The brand’s reputation for punctuality and passenger comfort remains closely tied to its founder’s original vision.

Azym Dossa’s story stands as a powerful reminder that entrepreneurship is not defined by age, but by clarity of purpose. By focusing on dignity, discipline and long-term trust, he built a company that changed expectations in an entire sector.

As tributes continue to pour in from passengers, employees and industry players, one thing is clear: his impact will continue to travel Kenya’s roads long after his final journey.
